Peragus II was a planet in the Outer Rim and a major source of low-grade engine fuel.
History
Approximately 4,000 BBY, a fuel mining colony was established on Peragus II. Its life proved to be short, however, when an accidental blaster shot triggered an explosion of flammable substances in Peragus II's crust and mantle, so powerful that it turned a large chunk of the planet into an asteroid field and exposed its core.
No more attempts were made to colonize the planet, and the newly-constructed Peragus Mining Facility instead extracted fuel from one of the asteroids, delving deeply into it. To prevent the Peragus II disaster, blasters were forbidden in the facility; mining droids used underpowered lasers, and self-defense relied on safer weapons, such as sonic blasters. To allow freighters to safely dock with the facility, astrogation charts were being constantly updated to reflect asteroid adrift and transmitted to navicomputers on inbound ships.
After the Jedi Civil War, Peragus was the primary exporter of fuel required to keep Citadel Station on orbit above Telos. If the fuel supply was somehow disrupted, Citadel Station would risk falling onto the planet's surface, endangering the Telosian Restoration Project. And that was exactly what happened.
Destruction of Peragus
In 3,951 BBY, a small freighter was heading towards the Peragus system. It was the Ebon Hawk, badly damaged by the Sith, with its "crew" (the Jedi Exile and Kreia) unconscious and only the droid T3-M4 capable of navigating the ship through the asteroid field. Although T3-M4 successfully repaired vital systems on the Ebon Hawk and docked it at the Peragus facility, neither he nor the facility personnel knew what disaster they triggered.
There was one more droid onboard: an HK-50 unit, who used the Ebon Hawk to escape the Republic capital ship Harbinger after it had been taken over by the Sith. This assassin droid, disguising himself as a protocol droid, was kept as useful for the facility and assigned appropriate duties.
As soon as the officials discovered that the Exile (who, being unconscious, was placed into the medical bay) was a Jedi—to no surprise, as they were told so by HK-50—they considered taking him to Nar Shaddaa to collect Goto's bounty. To ensure the Exile's safety (as he intended to collect the bounty himself), HK-50 started to undermine the facility's business by triggering explosions, orchestrating "accidents" that killed miners, and reprogramming mining droids to "mine" organics. The Peragus mechanics were aware of the binary decay the droids were experiencing, but could not track its source.
Eventually, Coorta and other administrative officers decided to flee from the facility to Nar Shaddaa, taking the Exile with them. Their plans were spoiled, however, as HK-50 sealed them within the dormitories and sent his mining droids to deal with them as they were desperately, albeit fruitlessly, trying to bypass security.
When the Exile finally awakened, HK-50 pretended to be a mere protocol droid irresponsible for the damage done to Peragus. He then tried to isolate the Exile and prevent her from reaching the hangar bay where the Ebon Hawk was kept by triggering a fake fuel leak which activated force fields in the fuel depot. However, as soon as the Harbinger—now in possession of Darth Sion and his Sith assassins—docked with the facility, the Exile, with the help of Kreia and Atton Rand, destroyed HK-50 and bypassed the force fields through the Harbinger's fuel lines.
As the Exile, Kreia, Atton and T3-M4 escaped the mining facility on the Ebon Hawk (which, ironically enough, HK-50 had ordered the droids to repair), Sion pursued them on the Harbinger. When a shot from the Harbinger hit an asteroid, it exploded, along with the rest of the asteroid field and the ravaged facility. The Ebon Hawk barely escaped the explosion.
Aftermath
The destruction of Peragus had a deeper impact than the Exile could probably imagine. Even though it was technically the fault of HK-50 and the Sith, she was repeatedly accused of it, first by Lieutenant Dol Grenn and later by Atris and G0-T0.
To prevent an even greater cataclysm—the failure of the Telosian Restoration Project—the Exile, on behalf of Grenn and the Telosian Council, persuaded Vogga the Hutt to start providing Telos with fuel from Sleheyron. This was something G0-T0 strongly opposed, believing that deals with the Hutts would bankrupt the Republic, but in the end, it proved to be the only way to secure the successful completion of the project and the future of Telos.
